Pyrolitic – unless you were good at chemistry in school or did a chemistry degree at Uni you would most likely be baffled by this word. Wikipedia to the rescue:
Pyrolysis is a thermochemical decomposition of organic material at elevated temperatures in the absence of oxygen (or any halogen). It involves the simultaneous change of chemical composition and physical phase, and is irreversible. The word is coined from the Greek-derived elements pyro “fire” and lysis “separating”.
Perfect! Now we pretty much understand that although it sounds complicated, pyrolysis is just the name for the process of decomposition of materials with the aid of high temperature (in our case greasy food which we all hate to clean after using the oven).
Let’s be honest – using elbow grease on your oven is one of the most hated tasks in the kitchen, along with cleaning the hob. While no self cleaning hobs have yet been invented (someone quickly patent that idea!) , self cleaning ovens are now readily available on the market and if you use the oven at least a few times a week then you should definitely consider this function.
Let’s use a simple scenario: Saturday night, you have just used the oven to bake dinner, everyone compliments you for your amazing culinary skills, leaves the table and goes off to prepare for bed. You are left to load the dishes and clean the oven. This process would have taken a good 30 minutes + of your times before the pyrolysis function has been installed in ovens. All you have to do now is set the function to pyrolytic cleaning (the oven door will lock automatically to prevent someone accidentally opening the door ), the oven heats up to 500+ degrees, and the next morning all you have to do is spend 3 minutes to wipe out the remains of grease/food which have been obliterated into fine ash. Presto! As a finishing touch, spray some Mr Sheen/Muscle/Windolene onto a soft cloth and wipe the door/handle and your oven is as good as new.
It is easy to understand why this function is now a must have in a modern kitchen. Ask your kitchen designer for more information about smart ovens.
Did you know – In September 2017 Miele released an oven which uses electromagnetic waves to cook. The demonstration was super jaw dropping – they presented a raw fish frozen in a block of ice, and placed it in the oven. Using electromagnetic waves the fish was perfectly cooked without the ice melting!
