In our days the kitchen is considered the capital of our home.  It truly is the only room in the house where you can do pretty much everything – cook, relax, watch television, socialise, study, help your kids study, etc.  Let’s not forget – the initial purpose of the kitchen used to be cooking, and this task still remains very important to all of us.  For this reason, I wanted to help you choose the correct hob as there as different options on the market which might confuse you.

I bet you have heard of the good old gas hob.  What makes it so good and popular?  Well let’s start with the price – gas hobs are very affordable as the technology used in them is pretty simple, most gas hobs use big manual nobs which are favoured by old school cooks as these give a sense of ease with controlling the temperature to your pots and pans, and talking about pots and pans – with a gas hob you can use pretty much any pot or pan.

What’s not so good about gas hobs?  Let’s start with the obvious, have you ever had to scrub burnt food or grease from a hob?  Believe me – it’s an unpleasant task, and one which most certainly will involve scratching the surface of the hob, leaving those small annoying swirl marks.  Secondly, the gas hob loses a lot of its heat energy by the time it gets to whatever it is that you’re cooking, and by a lot I mean over 60%!  Thirdly, have you seen those big chunky metal things which are placed over the burners on the hob?  Not particularly eye candy if you have a modern minimalistic kitchen!

Now, let’s talk about electric hobs.  Compared to gas – these are more efficient in conducting energy to your food.  They lose around 30% of energy as compared to a gas hob’s over 60% figure.  They look pretty sleek to, and you can have them with nobs or touch screen sensors to control the temperature.  They are fairly easy to clean which is also a big bonus.  What can I say against electrical hobs?  They take a while to heat up to the necessary temperature, and a while to cool down which is not ideal from a safety aspect, especially if you have kids.

I have left the best till last.  Induction hobs.  What are they?  Unlike the gas hob where the combustible fuel source is heated up, this heat is passed to your cookware and then to your food, or the electrical hob where there is a heating element which heats up the surface of the hob and this heat is then passed to your cookware which heats/cooks your food.  The induction hob uses special magnets which make the atoms in iron cookware move fast and generate heat essentially heating up just the pan and nothing else.  This is brilliant from a safety perspective isn’t it?  You can touch an induction hob seconds after turning it off.  This method also ensures that minimal energy is lost (around 15%), which means that an induction hob will cook your food a lot faster than a gas or electrical hob.  An induction hob can boil a full pan of water in less than 90 seconds.  They are also very easy to clean because if you have a spill you will be wiping it from a cold surface, and with touch sensitive controls you have a greater control over your cooking.  What is bad about induction hobs?  The price.  Simple.  They are dearer than gas and electrical hobs, and you will have to get special cookware for them.  Don’t forget though – with such great energy efficiency your outlay will be justified and you shall get your return on investment.
